Profile Mondays: Jimmy Chin

Birthplace: Mankato, Minnesota
Age: 40
Profession: Professional Photographer/Climber
Sponsor: The North Face

A sponsored athlete with The North Face and one of the most sought after adventure photographers in the world is enough to tell you that Jimmy Chin is a very talented individual.

After taking a year out to climb and ski in the 90's by living in the back of his car, that 'year' soon became seven. By a stroke of luck, he sold a photo he'd took on a friends camera for $500 and the rest is history.

Jimmy has since had his work published by National Geographic, The Outdoor Journal and has also filmed for Working Title.

While filming two professional skiers in 2011, Jimmy was caught in an avalanche and forced 2000 feet down the mountain. Miraculously, he survived, after being pushed out at the bottom end of it; a stark reminder to the risks taken in order to get the perfect shot.

Photography aside, Chin has also been on many expeditions and has various accolades to his name. In 2006, he became the first American to successfully ski descend Mt. Everest and a year later, joined Conrad Anker and others in retracing George Mallory's last Everest journey.

His ongoing desire for extreme expeditions has led to him being sponsored by The North Face for over a decade, as well as being featured on the front cover of Outside Magazine.

At 40 years old, Jimmy has seen almost every corner of the globe, yet his passion for photography and adventure will no doubt see him continue to explore.
